International Orangutan Day

Sketched whilst on holiday this is to celebrate International Orangutan Day today. My daughter was too busy playing in the waves to want to sit still and colour in with me - totally fair enough - so this is just my creation using pencils bought from the local supermarket.

These red-haired apes that live in the forests of Sumatra and Borneo in south-east Asia are so closely related to humans; they share 97% DNA with us (https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/01/110126131536.htm). Amazing. However, unfortunately, they're endangered due to the clearing of their forests for palm oil plantations, along with illegal hunting (https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/animals/general-animals/ten-facts-about-orang-utans/). So, we have many reasons not to leave our furry orange cousins just hanging.
